Hi, I’m Maheli!
I moved to the UK from Sri Lanka when I was 14 — halfway through Year 10, right in the middle of GCSEs. At that time, everything felt uncertain. I didn’t fully understand the UK school system, I didn’t know how admissions worked, and I was suddenly in a completely new environment, culture and routine.
Those first weeks felt overwhelming — trying to adjust, find a school, understand subjects, catch up with GCSE topics, and fit into a place where everyone already seemed settled. There were moments I doubted myself and moments I missed home more than I expected.
But step by step, with consistency, support and belief, I adjusted. Although it took some time, I caught up academically, built confidence, made friends, and learned how the system here works. I am now in Sixth Form studying Maths, Physics,Chemistry and Further Maths for A-Levels, working hard towards university and my future career.
Why I Created This Guide?
When I first arrived, I wished there was someone my age who had gone through the same experience — someone who could guide me, answer questions, and simply say: “You’re not behind. You’re just new. And you will catch up.”
That support didn’t exist for me — so I decided to build it for others.
I created this space to help international students, especially those who join school mid-year or mid-GCSEs, feel supported and confident. Whether you’re figuring out admissions, catching up on subjects, adapting socially, or building a new life — this space is for you.
My Motivation & Future Goals
My goal isn’t only to succeed academically — it’s also to give back to other international students who are just starting this journey.
I want to:
- Share real experiences and guidance
- Make this transition less confusing and stressful
- Help students believe in themselves
- Build a community where no one feels alone or “behind”
- Create more support spaces for immigrant student success in the future
Moving countries as a teenager doesn’t make you weaker — it makes you more adaptable, resilient, and determined.
What My Journey Taught Me
Coming to the UK taught me:
- Not to be afraid to fail as there it always makes you stronger and there is also plenty of support available.
- How to adapt in a completely new environment
- That asking for help shows strength, not weakness
- Making new friends and finding your social circle might not be easy at first but you will get there eventually.
- That success doesn’t happen overnight — it builds slowly
- That you can belong in more than one place
- That every challenge is shaping you into someone stronger
I am still growing, still learning, and still building my future — and I hope to help others do the same.
To Anyone Starting This Journey
If you are new to the UK school system, unsure about where you belong, or nervous about starting again — you are not alone! So don’t be afraid to reach out.
You don’t need to have everything figured out right now.
You don’t need to be perfect.
You just need to keep moving forward, one day at a time.
You belong here. And you will thrive here.
I believe in you, just like I learned to believe in myself.
